By replacing fossil fuels with renewable fuels, Neste reports that it has helped reduce global climate emissions by a staggering 8.3 million metric tons in 2017.

This is equal to removing 3 million passenger cars from the roads for a full year.

The amount of greenhouse gas emissions saved with Neste’s renewable fuels, primarily Neste MY Renewable Diesel, increased by 1.6 million tons from 2016 thanks to increased production at the company’s renewable fuels refineries in Finland, the Netherlands, and Singapore.

“Seeing these impressive numbers is very encouraging for us,” said Jeremy Baines, vice president of sales, Neste US, Inc. “Everything we do at Neste is in service of making our customers’ lives easier, healthier, and more sustainable. Seeing our goals accomplished in such a tangible way is immensely fulfilling.”

Replacing fossil diesel with the company’s renewable diesel provides the greatest benefit to end users. Refined from waste and residue raw materials, such as meat processing wastes, used cooking oils, and residues from vegetable oil processing, renewable diesel provides up to 80% reduction in carbon emissions. Waste and residues account for the vast majority of Neste’s renewable raw material usage.

In addition to significantly reducing global climate emissions, replacing conventional diesel with the company’s renewable diesel can improve local air quality by reducing local exhaust emissions, nitrogen oxides, particulates, and carbon monoxide. The clearer, emission-cutting benefits of the renewable diesel can offer are strongest in older and less developed engines.
