Yale University Chooses an Easy-to-Adopt Solution to Reduce Fuel Emissions

Over the last year, Yale University initiated a hybrid-electric vehicle program with XL Hybrids for three Ford 24-passenger shuttle buses. In just 6 months, Yale’s new hybrid buses saved more than 40 metric tons of carbon-dioxide, thanks to a 23% improvement in miles-per-gallon. As a result, Yale has already re-ordered additional Ford shuttles with XL Hybrids technology in 2016.

The MPG improvement data was gathered from the feedback of XL Hybrids’ connectivity system, XL Link™, and Yale’s own analysis. The XL Link technology provides a continuous data link from Yale’s hybrid vehicles and collects hundreds of operational data points, such as miles driven, fuel usage, idling time and average speed. The data is used to proactively monitor XL Hybrids system health, ensure vehicle uptime and report MPG performance in the field.

As a world-leader in education with one of the most progressive sustainability programs, Yale University has worked with many clean technologies and alternative fuels. Yale chose XL Hybrids because XL offers an easy-to-adopt solution to reduce emissions and exceed sustainability goals.

Yale University and XL HybridsThe XL Hybrids electric drive seamlessly integrates into the vehicle and doesn’t require special driver training or fueling infrastructure. The XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System saves fuel through regenerative braking, a process by which the electric motor helps slow the vehicle when the driver brakes, charging the battery. When the driver accelerates, the battery releases the energy to the electric motor, helping propel the vehicle.

Additionally, Yale University has benefited from XL Hybrids technology through increased driver productivity thanks to the higher miles driven per gallon. Plus, the “green” branding on its buses shows students and faculty that the university is committed to sustainable practices.

To help university fleet managers better understand how hybrid electric vehicles cut fuel use and emissions, XL Hybrids is hosting a free webinar: Proven Quick Wins to Meet Fleet Sustainability Goals.
