Canadian Freight Volumes Shatter Six-Month Record

truckCompared to last year’s first half, TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index saw volumes swell 42 percent year-over-year, shattering any combined semi-annual volumes.

June also marks the sixth consecutive month of record-setting volumes. Month-over-month load volumes were flat from May to June.

While second quarter volumes decreased four percent from the first quarter, volumes jumped 38 percent compared to second quarter results from 2013.

The high point, year-to-date, was set in March. TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index accurately measures trends from roughly 5,000 of Canada’s trucking companies and freight brokers. Real-time and historical data on total truck and load volumes, as well as ratios in specific areas can be accessed from TransCore’s Posting Index.

  • Cross-border postings accounted for 72 percent of total load volumes.
  • Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States increased 67 percent year-over-year.
  • Cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada increased 30 percent year-over-year.
  • Intra-Canada load volumes represented 23 percent of the total volumes for May and soared 56 percent year-over-year.
