All Systems “Go” at PortMiami Tunnel
Following a two-month construction delay, the long-awaited PortMiami Tunnel is fully operational.
With a hefty price tag of $1 billion and multiple delays, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez, announced: “It’s a great day.”
The main goal of the tunnel is to encourage as many cargo truck drivers as possible to go under the bay to relieve traffic on the surface streets in downtown Miami.
Cargo trucks contribute to congestion as they make their way through downtown to get to the seaport from area expressways. Now that the tunnel is open, trucks can drive directly to the port from Interstate 95 and State Road 836.
