First Fully Electric Truck for HD Distribution from Mercedes-Benz
Fleets may be getting a new charge as Mercedes-Benz presents what it calls “the first fully electric truck for heavy distribution operations.”
The model is known as the Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck, and has an admissible total weight of up to 26 tons. This means that in future, heavy trucks will take part in urban distribution operations with zero local emissions and hardly a whisper.
Don’t get too excited, just yet. The company reports that the “market launch of this technology is conceivable for Daimler Trucks at the beginning of the next decade.”
The anticipated range is approximately 125 miles, suitable for urban short-radius distribution.
Until quite recently, the use of fully electric drives systems in trucks seemed to be unimaginable – especially because of the high costs of the batteries coupled with a low range. The technology has now become much more mature. In particular battery cells rapidly developing further.
