NGV Conference & Expo to Celebrate DOE Clean Cities Program’s 20th
NGVAmerica’s 2013 North American NGV Conference & Expo slated for November 18–21 at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) in Atlanta, Ga., will celebrate 20 years of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Clean Cities program, which advances the nation’s economic, environmental and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum use in transportation.
DOE created Clean Cities in 1993 in response to the enactment of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct), a federal law that required certain vehicle fleets to acquire alternative fueled vehicles. The program has since expanded over time to include other complimentary technologies to reduce petroleum consumption.
The core of the program’s success may be attributed to its nearly 100 local Clean Cities Coalitions, which are public-private partnerships comprising private companies, fuel suppliers, local governments, vehicle manufacturers, national laboratories, state and federal government agencies and other organizations. Stakeholders in these local coalitions have joined together to implement alternative-transportation solutions in their communities, resulting in the displacement of more than 4.5 billion gallons of petroleum since the program’s inception.
NGVAmerica has joined with Clean Cities-Atlanta (CC-A), the first DOE-designated coalition (September 1993), to commemorate the milestone. “It’s fitting that we return here to Atlanta— home of the very first coalition—to partner with Clean Cities-Atlanta to recognize the tremendous contributions of Clean Cities Coalitions across the country,” said NGVAmerica president Richard Kolodziej. “The return of this premiere event to Atlanta at this time is exciting,” said CC-A Executive Director Don Francis. “We’ve been active in building a crescendo of NGV market activity here in Atlanta and the surrounding metro area, and we’re honored to partner with NGVAmerica to recognize the contributions of this and other Clean Cities Coalitions.”

Themed “Transportation Fuel for a Better Bottom Line,” the 2013 North American NGV Conference & Expo will feature multiple tracks with breakout sessions addressing how to further accelerate NGV market development to create American jobs, energize local and national economies, reduce businesses’ transportation costs and help American consumers stretch their budgets, all while improving the environment and strengthening energy independence. The 2013 event also marks the return of an exposition featuring the full breadth of light, medium and heavy duty vehicles from OEM and retrofit system suppliers, fuel station equipment and services providers, and a variety of public and private program implementation experts ready to assist fleets in assessing options and moving efforts forward.
