New CEA Standards Group Seeks to Reduce Distracted Driving
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® announced that it is forming the Driver Device Interface Working Group to develop industry standards and/or best practices for designing consumer electronics products to help maximize driver safety while using consumer technologies in the car.
“Consumer electronics manufacturers have developed products like GPS and hands-free Bluetooth that reduce the amount of time a driver must look away from the road. It makes sense to encourage development of these technologies rather than to try to regulate every possible distraction.”
CEA’s Portable Handheld and In-Vehicle Electronics Committee approved this group to deal with portable and handheld consumer electronics products, as well as consumer electronics products used in private and commercial vehicles, boats and aircraft.
“We believe that safety is paramount in a moving vehicle. A driver’s highest priority should be safe driving and control of the vehicle at all times,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. “Consumer electronics manufacturers have developed products like GPS and hands-free Bluetooth that reduce the amount of time a driver must look away from the road. It makes sense to encourage development of these technologies rather than to try to regulate every possible distraction.”
Many of CEA’s member companies make, distribute and sell products aimed at increasing safety and reducing distracted driving, such as apps that track and restrict device usage, technology that follows drivers’ eye movements, and systems that issue alarms for lane drifting and automatically apply brakes to avoid collisions.
