AMP E-GEN™ Electric Truck Gets EPA OK for On-Board Emergency Generator
AMP Holding, a medium-duty truck OEM, has announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved its WORKHORSE E-GEN™ electric truck that employs an alternatively-fueled 2.4 liter engine as an emergency generator to charge the battery pack.
As configured in the E-GEN Truck, the combination of the right-sized battery pack coupled with the security of an on-board backup generator and a transmission-less direct-drive system, provides a cost-competitive electric truck that also reduces range anxiety typically associated with electric trucks.
The truck incorporates a small spark-ignition engine as an emergency generator that automatically turns on to recharge the battery pack only if the pack’s state of charge falls below a predetermined threshold, and the drive selector is in PARK.
Noted Martin Rucidlo, President of AMP Electric Vehicles, “Delivering this unique solution to the medium duty truck market is a game-changer for fleet operators interested in reducing the life-cycle costs of their vehicles.” The use of the engine enables AMP to produce an electric vehicle (EV) with a smaller battery pack.
The smaller battery pack allows the company to produce a very competitively-priced EV that yields a positive return on its incremental cost in as little as three years, while eliminating operator concerns about range.
An E-GEN Workhorse truck is anticipated to deliver the equivalent of 20 mpg.
