Beijing ‘Charges’ Forward With Electric Taxis
China is known for having some of the worst air pollution in the world and air pollution has been recently listed as the primary environmental cause of death globally.
These sobering statistics are in large part why China is attempting to lead the charge forward with renewable technologies and reduce emissions to reduce the amount of man-made smog.
The latest approach involves replacing more than 70,000 taxis in Beijing with electric vehicles. Although the initiative may take over a decade to achieve, with an end-goal of having 100% electric vehicles, more consider it both a major drive forward and a model for other cities worldwide.
Still, challenges abound. One of the biggest hurdles is how best to replace the current taxi refueling infrastructure with charge ports for all of the proposed electric vehicles. Currently, there is a shortage of charging stations throughout the city, which means vast numbers of new charging points will need to be installed to support the ambitious change.
