Canadian Spot Market Freight Drops 12% in April
Freight volumes for Canadian and cross-border loads subdued in April after three consecutive months of improvement, dropping 12 percent following last month’s peak close for the first quarter of 2016. Year-over-year volumes were down 17 percent compared to April 2015.
According to Transcore, which issued the findings, the “trend is typical for the month of April.”
Intra-Canada load volumes represented 27 percent of the total volumes and dipped slightly by two percent compared to volumes in April 2015.
Cross-border loads averaged 69 percent of the total data submitted by Loadlink’s Canadian-based customers. Loads leaving Canada were lower by six percent, and loads coming into Canada decreased 27 percent year-over-year.
Perhaps a weaker Canadian dollar is at play as well.
Posted equipment was flat month-over-month, but these postings represent a 13 percent increase year-over-year. The equipment-to-load ratio increased to 3.47 from 3.05 in March. Year-over-year, this ratio increased from 2.50 in April 2015, representing a 39 percent change.
