Drone Fleet Delivers 100 Packages in Switzerland’s Largest City
There was a buzz in the air quite literally around Switerland’s largest city, Zurich, as Daimler’s fleet of delivery drones took to the skys in what was a resounding success for the automaker who has adapted the Mercedes-Benz Vito into a drone launchpad for delivery of small online orders.
The pilot drone fleet program has completed around 100 successful flights using a pair of delivery drones and two Vito vans, each outfitted with integrated landing/launch platforms on the roof.
“The aim was to test the technology and the concept in real-world conditions and find out where optimisation was required,” said Mercedes-Benz Vans head of future transportation, Stefan Maurer. “We also wanted to know how people would react to this new form of transportation.”
The automaker expects the project to evolve quickly and expand into new potential applications.
