Mack Trucks Dealer TEC Equipment Receives Electric Vehicle Certification at Second Location

With the certification, TEC Equipment’s La Mirada and Fontana sites are now fully equipped and ready to service the Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle

Mack Trucks dealer TEC Equipment recently received Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) Dealer status at its La Mirada, California location, marking the second TEC dealer to achieve this designation in support of the Mack^® LR Electric refuse vehicle. TEC’s Fontana, California site was the first Mack dealer to be a Certified Electric Vehicle Dealer.

“Mack Trucks is pleased that TEC Equipment achieved Certified Electric Vehicle Dealer status at La Mirada and Fontana, exemplifying their dedication to electrification and being prepared for the service and support needs of Mack LR Electric customers,” said Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president of sales and commercial operations. “The investment made by TEC helps our customers with the unique demands of electric vehicles as they move toward adopting them into their fleets.”

To be EV-certified, dealerships must meet numerous stringent safety, charging, infrastructure, tooling and training requirements. Updating the facility is also required. TEC met frequently with the Mack team during the process to become a certified EV dealer to ensure their dealership met all the standards of the program for first the Fontana site and then the La Mirada location.

The La Mirada site offers a 15-service bay gas shop with two dedicated electric vehicle service bays and the main dealer location with 25 bays. The 59,000-square foot dealership offers 108,000 parts numbers onsite. TEC La Mirada has 115 employees, 25 technicians, 13 master technicians, two EV-certified technicians and two more in the process of being EV certified.

TEC Fontana has 80 total truck bays, with three dedicated to electric vehicles and each of those three can fit six trucks. The 174,000 square-foot location has 225,000 parts numbers available on site for purchase. The dealer employs 160 people, of which 36 are technicians, 12 are master technicians and five are EV-certified technicians.

With the certification, TEC Equipment’s La Mirada and Fontana sites are now fully equipped and ready to service the Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle.

           “EV certification sends a message – to our customers, the industry and even our employees – that TEC is on the forefront of new products and technologies, ready to help our customers succeed through the exciting transition to zero-emission electric transportation,” Thompson said.

The LR Electric is equipped with four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged by a 150kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system. The batteries provide vehicle propulsion, as well as power for all onboard accessories driven through 12V, 24V and 600V electric circuits. To account for the LR Electric vehicle’s increasing load throughout the day, a three-mode regenerative braking system helps recapture the energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes on a daily basis.

The Mack LR Electric may be fitted with equipment bodies from numerous manufacturers based on the unique needs of the customer. The same driver/passenger side driving configurations, as well as seating choices and door options, are offered in the LR Electric as on the diesel-powered Mack LR model. A copper-colored Bulldog hood ornament, signifying the fully electric drivetrain, is featured prominently on the hood. 

TEC Equipment has 28 locations on the west coast, servicing customers in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona. The La Mirada facility is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and TEC Fontana is open 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Production of the LR Electric began this month at the Mack Lehigh Valley Operations facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where all Class 8 Mack vehicles for North America and export are assembled.
