No Hands! Lyft to Advance New Self-Driving Division
Ride-sharing juggernaut Lyft has launched a new self-driving division and reportedly will develop its own autonomous ride-hailing technology.
The company expects to expands hiring for the new division and press reports note that it has signed a lease for 50,000-square-feet on the first floor of a Palo Alto facility.
There, it intends to build several labs and open testing spaces.
Earlier this year, Uber announced that it is using Volvo’s XC90 to test its self-driving technology on the roads. Uber will also partner with Daimler to operate self-driving cars on its network.
Beyond the regulatory, safety and technology hurdles, it is unclear how extensive the impact of self-driving cars will be on job for human drivers — but employment loss would be anticipated.
