NYC to Control 10,000 Intersections from Single Management Center
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) recently became the first in the world to actively manage and control more than 10,000 signalized intersections from a single traffic management center and one integrated system.
The process began in the 1980s and today encompasses all five boroughs. Now, the city’s $120 million custom intelligent traffic system manages recurring traffic congestion, incidents, special events, emergency responses and areas particularly susceptible to gridlock.
Use of adaptive traffic control algorithms have already reduced travel times by 10 percent on key corridors.
Called the TransSuite® Traffic Control System, and implemented by TransCore, it also enables city traffic and maintenance engineers to share traffic data across multiple agencies in real time.
Agencies such as law enforcement, fire and sanitation use this data to improve their efficiency and effectiveness in delivering services.
