Market Notes from Dean Croke, DAT Principal Analyst:

  • Van load-post volumes bounced back following the Labor Day week. Carriers returning to the market in higher numbers helped push the van load-to-truck ratio down by 0.4.
  • DAT One’s Top 50 van lanes (based on the number of loads moved) averaged $1.96 a mile, down 3 cents compared to last week but 35 cents higher than the national average.
  • Hurricane Francine affected Gulf Coast markets last week, mainly for flatbed freight. According to DAT’s Market Condition Index (MCI), flatbed truckload capacity was very tight last week in the Southeast Region and is forecast to remain the same well into this week as recovery and rebuilding efforts are underway. On the high-volume regional flatbed lane between the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex and New Orleans, volumes jumped by 17% week over week. There was short-term volatility on the Houston to New Orleans lane late last week; three-day benchmark spot rates were 70 cents a mile higher than the 12-month average.
  • Nationally, last week’s flatbed linehaul rates were 2 cents a mile higher than the same period the previous year, 11 cents higher than in 2019, and 4 cents lower than the three-month trailing average.
  • Linehaul rates exclude an amount equal to a national average fuel surcharge.
