Total Spot Rates Barely Move in the Latest Week

Data from Truckstop and FTR Transportation Intelligence for the week ended April 19 showed overall stability in broker-posted spot rates, although higher rates for flatbed equipment roughly offset lower rates for van equipment. The total market rate was at its highest level since the end of June. However, dry van spot rates were at their lowest level since the week before last year’s International Roadcheck inspection event, while refrigerated spot rates were at their lowest level in exactly a year. Meanwhile, flatbed rates were at their highest level since January of last year. Even so, van spot rates were slightly higher y/y while flatbed rates were down.

With truck postings rising and load postings falling, the Market Demand Index declined to 68.7, the lowest level in seven weeks.
