Spot Rates Ease Heading Into International Roadcheck Week
Data from Truckstop and FTR Transportation Intelligence for the week ended May 10 shows a market that continues to move mostly according to seasonal expectations. Broker-posted spot rates declined for each of the three principal equipment types during the week, although the decreases were no larger than they were during the same week last year. Spot rates are virtually certain to rise significantly this week. The International Roadcheck roadside inspection event – which this year will be held May 14-16 – almost always yields a sizable increase in spot rates due to trucking capacity being sidelined as many drivers avoid the hassle and scrutiny. During the same weeks in 2022 and 2023, total spot rates rose about 7 cents week over week with especially large gains in dry van and refrigerated.
With load postings up and truck postings down, the Market Demand Index rose to 74.9, which is the highest level in four weeks.
