Tentative Deal Reached on West Coast Port Dispute

According to the latest reports, negotiators have reached a tentative contract covering West Coast dockworkers.

It is anticipated that it will end a protracted labor dispute that has stalled international trade at seaports handling $1 trillion worth of cargo annually.

The tentative contract reached Friday evening still must be approved by the 13,000-member International Longshore and Warehouse Union’s rank-and-file. In terms of scale, they work 29 ports from San Diego to Seattle and handle about one-quarter of all U.S. international trade.

Because of the slowdown, numerous ships loaded with imported goods are using waters off the ports as parking lots. Estimates are that it will take weeks — and probably months — to unblock that traffic jam.
