Musk Claims Tesla to Produce 100,000 Electric Class 8 Trucks Yearly
Within the next four years, Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, predicts the company will produce at 100,000 new electric Class 8 trucks a year.
Speaking after the dramatic launch of the SpaceX rocket, Musk stressed that “100,000 units a year is a reasonable expectation. Maybe more, but that’s the right – roughly the right number, I think.”
Tesla’s electric Class 8 trucks were unveiled in November, with starting prices at $150,000 for a a 300-mile range model, and $180,000 for a 500-mile range model. So far Tesla has reported orders for its electric class 8 trucks from major companies such as Walmart and Pepsi just to name a few.
At the same event, Musk reiterated his belief that Lidar is not required to autonomous driving. Lidar, the technology used by numerous firmS involved in autonomous driving, is short for light detection and ranging.
Instead, Tesla will rely on cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.
“Now perhaps I am wrong,” Musk saiD. “In which case, I’ll look like a fool. But I am quite certain that I am not.”
Will Tesla be able to live up to Musk’s expectations? Only time will tell.
