New research reveals the states with the most drivers who speed

On average, it’s estimated that more than 100,000 speeding tickets are issued to US drivers each day, costing America approximately $6 billion a year. Speed limits are there to ensure your safety, along with your passengers’ and fellow drivers’. But which states are the worst at adhering to speed limits? 

The team at MarketWatch Guides has analyzed data across the country to reveal the states which receive the most speeding tickets.

1.   Ohio – 14.95% of drivers that have received a speeding ticket

Almost 15% of drivers have received a speeding ticket in Ohio. Ohio’s laws on speeding are very strict, regardless of whether you’re one mph or 20 mph over the speed limit. If you’re speeding between 10 mph and 30 mph over the limit, you will get two points on your license, and if you’re 30 mph or more over the speed limit, your punishment will be doubled. However, if you’re above the speed limit by less than 10 mph, you won’t get any points, but you will be fined. 

2.           Iowa – 14.87% of drivers that have received a speeding ticket

In second place is Iowa, with 14.87% of drivers receiving a speeding ticket. In Iowa, speeding is punishable by a fine or jail time, depending on how far over the limit you are. Fines range from $20 to $100; jail time can occur when caught 10 mph over the speed limit in a school zone.

3.           North Dakota – 14.41% of drivers that have received a speeding ticket

North Dakota concludes our top three, with 14.41% of drivers receiving a speeding ticket. Depending on the severity, North Dakota punishes speeding with fines and points. Fines can range from $5 to over $180, and severe speeding offenses could result in 15 points on your license. If you accumulate 12 points on your license, you could get a suspension, and those aged 18 and under could get a suspension after six points. 

Further findings: 

·         Residents of Connecticut obey the speed limit better than any other state, with less than 5% of drivers receiving a speeding ticket. 

  • The US area with the most fatal crashes involving speeding is Wyoming with 24 fatal crashes involving speeding per 100,000 licensed drivers
  • The US area with the fewest fatal crashes involving speeding is Florida, with 4.2 fatal crashes involving speeding per 100,000 licensed drivers.
