TransCore Canadian Freight Volumes Fall in February, Up vs. January
TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index volumes fell in February following last year’s unprecedented volumes, but remained higher than prior years.
Even with a shortened month and fewer shipping days, February’s daily loads, taken as an average, were two percent higher than in January. Compared to the lofty highs reported in 2014, load volumes this February fell 20 percent year-over-year.
Month-over-month volumes were down eight percent. Compared to last month, loads leaving Ontario decreased 10 percent, and loads leaving western Canada jumped 17 percent. Cross-border load volumes averaged 71 percent of the total, a decrease of two percent compared to January.
Despite the lower Canadian dollar, outbound load volumes decreased by nine percent compared to the same period last year.
Inbound loads decreased by about a third year-over-year, which according to Fleet News Daily economists, could be in part attributed to the soaring U.S. dollar. Intra-Canada load volumes represented 26 percent of the total volumes for February and decreased 14 percent year-over-year.
