TransCore’s Canadian Freight Volumes Up Big in December
TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index closed last year setting a record high for December load volumes.
With two fewer shipping days, December’s volumes jumped 11 percent month-over-month and represented the highest month-over-month percentage change for the second half of the year. December also had the largest year-over-year increase compared to any month in 2013 surpassing December 2012 load volumes by a remarkable 29 percent.
Last year started and ended with noteworthy load volumes. Annual volumes for 2013 hit a historic high for the month of January followed by an up-and-down trend for subsequent months before ending strong with a record-breaking high for the month of December.
- Cross-border postings averaged 67 percent of total load volumes.
- Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States soared by 50 percent year-over-year.
- Cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada climbed by 16 percent year-over-year.
The top five states of origin for loads destined to Canada ordered from highest to lowest total loads were Ohio, Illinois, Texas, California and Pennsylvania.
Intra-Canada load volumes represented 28 percent of the total volumes for December and increased significantly by 30 percent compared to the same period last year.
