Truckers Send Regulatory Priorities Letter to President-elect Biden

The Association would like to see FMCSA review carriers in a way that accurately reflects crash risk and crash causation, including the connection to driver compensation

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association’s president and CEO, Todd Spencer, sent a letter with a list of regulatory priorities to President-elect Joe Biden today.

The letter expresses the things that the Association’s members believe would help the agency accomplish its primary mission, which is to reduce crashes involving large trucks. It also points out issues that mean the most to small-business truckers which make up the majority of the trucking industry fleets.

“We should review regulations currently in place that have a direct connection to crashes,” said Spencer. “It’s also important to have expanded dialogue about issues that impact small-business truckers such as infrastructure funding, truck parking, detention time, automated vehicles and many others.”

The Association would like to see FMCSA review carriers in a way that accurately reflects crash risk and crash causation, including the connection to driver compensation. OOIDA also strongly believes in training standards.

“Too many new drivers enter the industry without the basic skills to safely operate a CMV,” said Spencer.

“There are more regulations in place today than ever, and there is more enforcement and compliance with those regulations, yet highway safety isn’t improving,” said Spencer. “We look forward to working closely with the incoming Administration to advance policies that matter most to professional drivers and are most meaningful to improving highway safety.”
