U.S. Container Exports at Five-Year Low
Ocean container exports dropped 1.5 percent in May, setting a new low in the five‐year history of this index.
Compared to May of last year, container exports were down 24.3 percent.
These small monthly fluctuations, according to Cass Information Systems, are typical for the time of year – export and import container volumes usually remain relatively flat from April to May.
Container Exports
Ocean container exports fell 1.5 percent in May after falling 8.7 percent from March to April. Exports to China ticked up 1.4 percent this month after four months of decline, but are still 31.5 percent lower than just five months ago.
Overall, ocean container exports have fallen 7.3 percent in 2014.
Container Imports
Import container shipments slid downward 0.8 percent following two months of very strong gains.
Container imports from China, our largest trading partner for ocean container shipments, held steady. Imports rose from nearly half of our top 25 trading partners, especially New Zealand, Pakistan, Peru and Indonesia, which were the sources for 44 percent of the increase in goods shipped.
