Video Safety Program Reduces Speeding and Mobile Phone Use

As fleets seek to improve driver performance and safety records, recent data shows that video safety programs that measure performance can indeed reduce both speeding and mobile phone use.

The example of a leading regional parcel carrier LSO, formerly Lone Star Overnight, is a case in point.

LSO, which delivers throughout the Southern states of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana and in Mexico, selected video-based driver technology as part of its commitment to enhance the company’s safety program.

Since implementing the approach, LSO has improved its safety score by 47 percent, which has a direct correlation to reduction in crash rate, and has benefited from enhanced visibility to key areas to focus on for continuous period-over-period improvement.

Noted Steve Hendon, safety & compliance manager at LSO, the use of “video-based safety program helps us identify and address high risk areas, including cell phone usage, driver fatigue, rolling stops and seatbelt compliance. Armed with this information, we were able to quickly and productively engage drivers on areas for improvement and measure the results with easy-to-understand, easy-to-act-on key performance metrics.”

Video-based safety programs can identify high risk driving that leads to collisions by capturing video, vehicle, audio and driving data. This footage is automatically offloaded for expert review and analysis, providing a clear picture of what is happening on the road and is prioritized for action by the fleet.
