Building Public Trust Key to Advancing Autonomous Vehicles
For self-driving vehicles to really roll, a study by Cox Automotive shows that a large segment of the public agrees that autonomous vehicle testing is necessary.
However, most people do not want it happening in their own backyards.
Most respondents also said they would not give up complete control of a vehicle to a computer without the choice to takeover.
Municipalities are trying a number of different ways to accomplish testing while building public trust. Testing in actual traffic situations is a key part in developing safer self-driving trucks and cars. That said, recent incidents that involved loss of life has put the brakes on some tests.
So, it’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation. Testing is needed for public trust. At the same time, many members of the public do not want testing at this time.
