Electric Drive HD Truck Market Gains Traction

According to the latest research, electric drive trucks as a global “fleet” currently number approximately 20,000, with 10,000 sold in 2013 alone.

What’s more, according to Navigant Research, the market is projected to grow to 350,000 globally by 2020. In terms of what’s going right, H=hybrids have made significant inroads in the transit bus sector.

That said, the commercial sector has a way go, but the advantages of going green are substantial.

Topping the list is increased fuel economy, with grid electricity costing the equivalent of $1 per gallon with far less price volatility.

From a broader perspective in the HD truck market, costs throughout the supply chain coming down, awareness of electric drive benefits is going up and public policy is starting to push hard for toward cleaner commercial vehicles.

On the federal level, the 21st Century Truck Partnership (21CTP) is bringing together 15 heavy duty engine, truck, and bus manufacturers with four federal agencies and 12 national laboratories.

Also a SuperTruck initiative is planned for the design of a heavy duty Class 8 truck which demonstrates a 50 percent improvement in overall freight efficiency measured in ton miles per gallon.

Further, the National Clean Fleets Partnership, which is committed to deploy clean, energy efficient vehicles and supporting infrastructure includes such participating companies including Cola, Enterprise Holdings, FritoLay, FedEx, Pacific Gas & Electric, UPS, and Waste Management.
