Mack^® LR Electric Ordered by Coastal Waste & Recycling to Help Reduce Emissions in South Florida

Coastal operates more than 450 vehicles, with more than half of them being Mack truck models. The LR Electric will be the first electric vehicle in Coastal’s fleet

Coastal Waste & Recycling recently ordered a Mack^® LR Electric refuse vehicle, the first electric vehicle in its fleet, to help the company continue to lead sustainable innovation and adopt technologies that enable a greener future.

The Mack LR Electric model will operate in Delray, Boca Raton and Pompano Beach, Florida.

“It’s great to see that Mack’s longtime customer, Coastal Waste & Recycling, ordered a Mack LR Electric vehicle as its first electric truck,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “The Mack LR Electric offers a quiet, zero-emissions collection vehicle that helps promote less fossil fuel dependence. We look forward to working with Coastal as they electrify their fleet.”

Brendon Pantano, CEO of Coastal, said he ordered a Mack LR Electric because of the company’s long-standing relationship with Mack and Mack’s reputation in the refuse industry.

“Being a third-generation garbageman, my earliest memories of trucks were always of Mack trucks,” Pantano said. “Mack has always had a great reputation with the waste business, so they were the obvious OEM to partner with.”

The Mack LR Electric will operate in residential and some boutique commercial applications, with a goal of collecting from up to 600 stops. The LR Electric will be equipped with an automated side loader.

The next generation Mack LR Electric, launched in March 2022 offers a standard 376 kWh total battery capacity for 42 percent more energy and increased range between vehicle charges. Twin electric motors produce 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of peak torque output from zero RPM.

Four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged through a 150 kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system, power the vehicle and all onboard accessories through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The two-stage regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day with an increasing load.

Coastal Waste & Recycling, headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, was founded by Pantano, a third-generation descendent of Horace and Dennis Pantano, founders of Fredonia Sanitary Services, Fredonia, New York. Fredonia Sanitary Services was sold to Browning-Ferris Industries in 1985. Pantano and his partners founded Coastal Waste & Recycling in late 2017.

“It is clear the industry is heading in the direction of electric vehicles, so the faster we are able to socialize the idea with our front-line teams, the better,” Pantano said. “We can use this first Mack LR Electric to learn and train our teams on what is to come, so that when they do become more prevalent in the market, we are ready for it.”

Describing the purchase process as smooth, Pantano said exploring new technologies is “organic to Coastal’s culture.”

Mack recently launched its all-inclusive Vehicle-as-a-Service (VaaS) to help simplify the purchase process, as well as help customers manage expenses associated with the electric vehicle acquisition. VaaS includes the vehicle chassis, refuse body, applicable taxes and the Mack Ultra Service Agreement, a comprehensive vehicle protection plan.

Standard on all Mack LR Electric models, the Ultra Service Agreement includes scheduled maintenance, preventative maintenance, towing and repair, a battery monitoring service and Mack’s connected uptime services in one package. It can be included with monthly truck payments for customers in the U.S. and Canada through Mack Financial Services (MFS).

          Mack also provides access to strategic supplier partnerships, investigating available funding opportunities and making key charging infrastructure recommendations to support their short- and long-term EV needs.

          Nextran Truck Centers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will provide service and support for Coastal Waste & Recycling.
