The North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) has released its first report from Run on Less – Messy Middle, How NACFE Helped Bring Clarity to the Messy Middle.
The report provides a blueprint of the various elements that make up the Run including how and why the NACFE team decided to focus on the long-haul sector of the trucking industry and how the 13 fleets were selected.
After considering a variety of fleets, NACFE selected the following fleets to participate in the Run ensuring that four powertrain solutions — diesel/renewable diesel, natural gas/renewable natural gas, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell — were represented.
- 4Gen Logistics operated a 2024 Volvo VNR battery electric vehicle out of Rialto, CA.
- Albert Transport operated a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia diesel vehicle out of Laredo, TX.
- Frito-Lay operated a Volvo VNL on B99 biodiesel out of Topeka, KS
- Joyride Logistics operated a Windrose battery electric truck out of Phoenix, AZ.
- Kleysen Group operated a 2025 Kenworth T880 on natural gas out of Edmonton, AB.
- Mesilla Valley Transportation operated an International diesel truck out of El Paso, TX.
- Nevoya operated a Freightliner battery electric eCascadia out of Colton, CA.
- Penske operated a Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel cell truck out of Lancaster, TX.
- Pilot operated a Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel cell truck out of Rialto, CA.
- Saia operated two battery electric Tesla Semis out of Stockton, CA.
- Schneider operated an International LT on renewable diesel out of Phoenix, AZ.
- UPS operated a Kenworth T680 on natural gas out of Salt Lake City, UT.
- Wegmans operated a Peterbilt 567 on natural gas out of Rochester, NY.
Matt Copot, vice president, fleet management at Saia, explained that “It helps to look at different technologies now and understand what markets do they exist in? How does the diesel equivalent perform? Where’s the equipment planning to be routed to? You have to understand that whole macro environment, from a business case, and if it’s advantageous for us to move into that market.”
By having multiple powertrains in the Run, NACFE provided fleets with some real-world data upon which to base their equipment purchasing decisions.
It also provides insight into visits to all 13 fleet sites, the various efforts to promote the Run including fleet profile videos, Stories from the Run and short Hot Takes videos. The report also contains information on the pre-event Bootcamp educational sessions.
One section of the report covers what was measured via Geotab devices for all four powertrains as well other specific metrics that were captured for each of the powertrains.
Initial findings from early analysis of the data were included, however NACFE is in the process of engaging the trucking industry in a more in-depth look at the data.
“This report is a blueprint that includes all the steps involved in taking Run on Less – Messy Middle from an idea to a three-week freight efficiency event,” said Denise Rondini, NACFE’s communications director. “We wanted to bring some clarity to the long-haul portion of the trucking industry and all the pieces associated with the Run — Bootcamp, site visits, interviews, videos, social media campaigns — did just that.”
In addition to this first report, NACFE plans to publish four additional reports throughout 2026 — an operations report, an emissions report, a TCO report and a final findings report.
